A 38-year-old son of an alleged D-company linked gangster Asif Shaikh alias Asif Dadi, was shot in the leg in Mumbai's Dockyard area, police said on Tuesday.
According to the officials, the injured identified as Sameer Sheikh was rushed to the hospital following the firing and is currently out of danger.
The incident has triggered a major investigation, with police examining multiple possible motives behind the attack.
"At around 18:15 hours, an incident of firing at the dockyard road in Byculla was reported. The injured person, Sameer Asif Shaikh sustained a single bullet injury but is currently out of danger. Further investigations were underway," said a senior police official.
Shaikh is out of danger and is being treated at a hospital, he said.
Sources stated that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and fired a single shot at his leg. It is suspected that the intention may have been only to threaten and intimidate him rather than to kill him. However, the probe was underway to explore all possible angles in the shooting incident.
The Byculla Police have registered an FIR in the matter, while the Mumbai Crime Branch is conducting a parallel probe and a detailed investigation.
Investigators are looking into several possibilities, including personal rivalry, gang rivalry and a possible contract killing attempt, sources said.
Official sources said teams are collecting CCTV footage from the area and questioning local contacts to identify the attackers and establish the sequence of events.
The experts from the forensic team also reached the spot for detailed examination of the firing incident.
Police said Sameer Sheikh is the son of Asif Dadi, who has allegedly been linked to the D-Company network.
According to police records, Asif Dadi himself had survived a firing incident in 2008.
Officials said the attack was allegedly carried out by members linked to the Chhota Rajan gang during a period of intense gang rivalry in Mumbai.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has intensified the investigation and is working to trace the shooters and uncover the motive behind the attack.
