An attempt by an older brother to protect his sibling ended in a violent knife attack in Govandi. Ajmal Ansari, 17, was critically injured on May 3 after confronting the accused Afan alias Saif Ali over his friendship with Ajmal's younger brother Rehmat, police said. The incident took place around 8.30 pm near Plot No. 28 on Road No. 11 in Bainganwadi, Govandi, while Ajmal was returning home with his friend Aamir.

Rising friction

The complaint filed by Ajmal's father, Shameem Inul Ansari, stated that the family had grown increasingly worried after Rehmat allegedly began roaming outside till late hours and spending time with Afan. Concerned about his younger brother's activities, Ajmal had warned both boys against roaming late at night and advised them to stay away from bad habits.

Following the confrontation, Rehmat allegedly stopped interacting with Afan. Police said the situation escalated further on May 3 when Rehmat allegedly ignored Afan while passing him on the road. While walking home, Ajmal was ambushed near Bainganwadi. Police say the attacker, Afan, verbally abused and threatened Ajmal before stabbing him in the ribs. Ajmal is now in the ICU at Sion Hospital.
