Kalyan Police in Maharashtra arrested three wanted accused, including a man allegedly found carrying 40 grams of mephedrone (MD) worth around Rs 8 lakh, during a targeted combing operation in an Irani settlement in Ambivli on Wednesday morning, officials said.
The operation was conducted to trace wanted and absconding accused, particularly those allegedly involved in serious offences.
The operation was carried out in the Irani settlement within the limits of Khadakpada police station.
Five police teams were formed under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ashok Honmane following directions from senior officers.
During the search, police identified three people wanted in cases registered at different police stations. The suspects - one man and two women - were taken into custody before they could allegedly escape.
The main accused was identified as Mohammed Ghulam Husein Jafri alias Shah Rukh, 35, a resident of the Ambivli Irani settlement.
Police said Jafri was wanted in several cases registered at Kalyan Rural and Wakad police stations. During the operation, officers allegedly recovered 40 grams of mephedrone, commonly known as MD, worth around Rs 8 lakh, from his possession.
Khadakpada police subsequently registered a separate case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Police said Jafri was wanted in six cases and had allegedly been booked in cases involving unlawful assembly, theft, cheating and robbery, among other offences.
The other two accused were identified as Shama Tehzeeb Irani, 38, of Patil Nagar in Ambivli, and Nafisa Hashmi Irani, 33, who lives in the Ambivli Irani settlement.
Police said Shama was wanted in a case registered at Khadakpada police station in 2024. The case includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Railway Act and the Criminal Amendment Act.
Nafisa was wanted in connection with a 2016 robbery case registered at Manpada police station, in which provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) were also invoked, according to police.
The operation involved teams from Khadakpada, Bazarpeth, Mahatma Phule Chowk and Kolsewadi police stations, along with a special action team from the Deputy Commissioner of Police's office.
A total of 17 police officers and 55 male and female personnel participated in the operation.
The operation was supervised by ACP Ashok Honmane and involved senior inspectors and other officers from the participating police stations.
Following the recovery of the alleged MD, Jafri was booked in the new NDPS case and produced before a court.
The court has remanded him to police custody until August 15.
Police said further investigation is underway.
