A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation on Thursday submitted a written complaint to the police against newly elected AIMIM corporator Sahar Shaikh, alleging that her remark 'paint Mumbra green' during a victory speech after the Maharashtra local body elections was provocative and could disturb communal harmony in Mumbra, a locality in Thane district, reported the PTI.
The complaint was submitted at the Mumbra police station by a delegation led by former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, who demanded action against the 22-year-old AIMIM leader.
During her victory speech, Shaikh, while addressing her supporters had asked people to paint Mumbra 'green' in the next elections and that in the next five years, every candidate from the area would be from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
However, in a statement to some reporters later, Shaikh had clarified that she had made the remark in context to the flag colour of her party and she would never make a communal statement due to her 'secular political mindset.'
A video of her statement has gone viral on social media platforms.
The BJP alleged that the statement was intended to incite communal tension and create fear among sections of the local population.
In the complaint letter, Somaiya stated that Mumbra is part of Maharashtra and referred to the state's cultural identity. He alleged that the speech reflected communal intent and was aimed at disturbing peace in the area.
The BJP urged the police to take immediate steps to ensure law and order in the region.
Confirming the complaint, senior police inspector Anil Shinde said the matter is under enquiry, as per the PTI.
"A delegation submitted a complaint regarding the remarks made by an elected AIMIM candidate. We are currently enquiring into the matter," he said, the news agency reported.
Police officials added that they are reviewing video footage and transcripts of the speech to determine whether any legal provisions have been violated.
The AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, made notable gains in the recently announced Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) election results, winning five out of 131 seats.
The party performed better than the Congress, which failed to win any seat, and the Shiv Sena (UBT), which secured just one seat, according to the PTI.
