A Navi Mumbai cop in Maharashtra on Sunday afternoon jumped into a lake to rescue a 35-year-old woman who was allegedly attempting suicide, reported the PTI.
The woman was safely rescued after she jumped into a lake in Navi Mumbai and later shifted to a hospital, officials said.
Police said that the woman, who was reportedly mentally unwell, entered the Roadpali Ganpati Visarjan Lake, prompting an immediate emergency response, according to the PTI.
The incident was reported to the police control room, after which a team of beat marshals was rushed to the spot.
According to a Kalamboli police station official, Constables Akash Wankhede and Sagar Mali reached the location within three minutes of receiving the alert, as per the PTI.
Constable Mali jumped into the lake and successfully rescued the woman.
She was pulled out safely and given immediate medical attention.
The woman has been admitted to hospital and her condition is reported to be stable. Police said they have been informed that she is mentally unwell, according to the PTI.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 34-year-old woman died after allegedly falling from the eighth floor of a residential building in the Talegaon MIDC area of Pune district in Maharashtra, police said, adding that it was probing suicide angle into her death, reported the PTI.
Police said, prima facie, the case appears to be a suicide and further probe was underway to find the exact circumstances.
The incident took place between 1 pm and 1.30 pm at a housing society near Katvi.
According to the police, following the incident, she was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital after the fall, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
A video of the incident has surfaced on social media and is now being reviewed by the police as part of the investigation. The footage reportedly shows the woman hanging from the balcony grill before losing her grip and falling, as per the PTI.
According to Senior Inspector Santosh Patil of Talegaon MIDC police station, the initial assessment suggests it is a case of suicide. However, further probe was underway, reported the PTI.
"Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. The woman fell from the eighth floor and was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead. The viral video is being examined," he said, according to the PTI.
An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered, and further investigation is underway, police said.
