Police in Mumbra area of Thane district in Maharashtra have booked seven persons for allegedly arranging the marriage of a minor girl during a mass wedding ceremony without her father's consent, officials said on Monday, reported the PTI.
The case was registered following a complaint filed by a woman social worker.
According to police, the mass ânikah' ceremony was organised on December 2 last year in Sonaji Nagar area of Mumbra in Thane district.
Officials said the girl's Aadhaar details showed her date of birth as September 30, 2008, indicating that she was below 18 years of age at the time of the marriage, according to the PTI.
Police alleged that the marriage was conducted without the consent of the girl's father.
The accused have been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Those named in the case include the organisers of the mass wedding event, qazi who solemnised the nikah, girl's mother, groom, other persons linked to the ceremony and a school principal, as per the PTI.
Police have not yet disclosed the exact role of the school principal in the matter.
Officials from Mumbra Police Station said no arrests have been made so far.
Further investigation is underway to determine all circumstances connected to the alleged child marriage.
In an another incident, earlier this month, a 40-year-old man from Thane was arrested for allegedly raping a housewife over nearly two years on the false promise of marriage and forcing her to undergo an abortion, officials had earlier said, the PTI had reported.
The action against accused, a resident of Kolsewadi in Kalyan, came on a complaint by a 27-year-old woman, originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh and currently residing in Kalyan.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the crime was committed between September 2024 and April 2026. Citing the complaint, a police official said that he allegedly lured the woman with the promise of marriage, claiming he would legally divorce his current wife.
"The accused took the complainant to various rented rooms and lodges, where he allegedly engaged in repeated physical relations with her under the pretext of their future marriage," the official had said.
When the woman became pregnant, he allegedly forced her to take abortion pills, leading to a miscarriage without her consent, as per the FIR, reported PTI.
The victim and her parents recently visited the suspects's residence to question him about the status of his divorce and his commitment to marry her. However, he allegedly insulted, abused and assaulted the three, the officials had earlier said.
The Kongaon police had taken the accused into custody.
