The MIDC Police in Mumbai have arrested an employee of a jewellery company for allegedly staging a robbery and misappropriating gold ornaments worth Rs 60.65 lakh entrusted to him for delivery.
According to the complaint lodged by the company, Avinash Gangadhar Kadam (26), an employee of Goldstar Company, had been assigned to deliver jewellery worth Rs 60,65,656.
During the course of the delivery, Kadam allegedly claimed that he had met with an accident while travelling on his two-wheeler and had lost consciousness, following which unidentified persons stole the jewellery. However, investigators found discrepancies in his account, noting that he had not suffered any injuries in the alleged accident despite seeking hospital admission citing discomfort.
Police examined hundreds of CCTV footage recordings and identified a suspicious individual seen loitering repeatedly near the scene before the reported incident. The man was traced and identified as Manoj Hanmant Jogdand (41).
During interrogation, Kadam and Jogdand were confronted with evidence, following which they allegedly confessed to having conspired and fabricated the robbery as part of a pre-planned scheme.
Police subsequently arrested both the accused and recovered the entire stolen property, valued at Rs 60,65,656.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Dr Abhinav Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade (Zone 10), and Assistant Commissioner of Police Gajanan Pawar (Andheri Division).
The investigation was supervised by Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Vani and Police Inspector (Crime) Mahesh Gurav, while the detection team led by Police Sub-Inspector Kiran Parbat, along with other officers and staff, played a key role in cracking the case.
The Bangur Nagar police have arrested a business process outsourcing (BPO) office employee and his friend for allegedly stealing phones and cash from the locker area of his workplace in Malad West's Mindspace. The former did not commit the theft himself but allegedly handed over his access card to the latter, an alleged habitual offender.
According to police sources, the employee, Aditya Das, 23, a Mira Road resident, had been working with the BPO for around one-and-a-half years, and several theft cases had been registered against his friend, Pratik Sakpal, 21, at Dadar, Nehru Nagar, Mira Road, and Panvel.
The police said that as the office's official locker facility had proven insufficient, some staff members would keep their bags and valuables in an open locker room before entering the workplace, and it was this spot that Sakpal targeted with Das's guidance.
