A dispute over an alleged Rs 2 lakh loan took a shocking turn in Mumbai's Dongri area after a 33-year-old man claimed he was illegally confined, assaulted and humiliated by a group of men for nearly two days, officials said.
Dongri Police have arrested five accused in connection with the case after the victim approached authorities and reported the alleged ordeal.
According to police, complainant Sachin Ranpise (33) alleged that he was forcibly confined inside a room at MM Residency lodge near Baba Dargah in Dongri between June 8 and June 10.
Investigators said the victim had allegedly borrowed Rs 2 lakh from one of the accused but was unable to repay the amount due to financial difficulties. He reportedly requested additional time to return the money.
Police said the accused allegedly decided to forcefully detain him in an attempt to recover the debt.
According to the complaint, Ranpise was kept inside Room No. 104 of the lodge for almost 48 hours.
During this period, he was allegedly assaulted multiple times with a leather belt, resulting in injuries to his head, hands and back.
Police said the victim also alleged that he was denied food and water throughout his confinement.
Investigators are examining medical evidence and other material collected during the probe.
One of the most serious allegations made by the complainant is that he was allegedly stripped and forced to walk naked through the corridor of the lodge in an attempt to humiliate him.
He further claimed that a lawyer known to one of the accused verbally abused him and threatened to kill him.
Police said all allegations are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrested accused have been identified as Abdullah Shaukat Bhusari (21), Junaid Kayamuddin Khan (26), Mohammad Saad Pathan (26), Arafat Hasham Khanani (24) and Sahil Sheikh (25).
Following the registration of the case on June 11, police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the area.
Although the footage did not immediately provide conclusive evidence, information gathered through local intelligence led officers to the Mazgaon area, where the suspects were traced and detained.
Police said the accused were questioned and their alleged involvement in the incident emerged during interrogation.
Investigators have also recovered property believed to be connected to the offence and are examining its relevance to the case.
The operation was conducted by the Dongri Police crime detection team under the supervision of senior police officers from Zone I.
The accused have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including offences related to wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
Police said further investigations are underway to determine the exact role of each accused and verify all allegations made by the complainant.
