A man was arrested for allegedly molesting a young woman while travelling on a Mumbai local train, railway police in Thane district said, reported the PTI.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday morning when the 20-year-old woman, a resident of Ghatkopar East in Mumbai, was returning home by local train.
According to police, the 30-year-old accused has been identified as a resident of Ambernath, the news agency reported.
Investigators said that the man allegedly exposed himself to the woman and touched her inappropriately during the journey. Following the incident, the victim approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Officials from the Kalyan Railway Police acted on the complaint and arrested the accused.
Senior Inspector Pandhari Kande said a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as per the PTI.
Police have booked the accused on charges related to assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, sexual harassment, and acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman, among other offences.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
A video shared on social media has sparked widespread outrage after a Mumbai woman alleged that an autorickshaw driver allegedly made sexually explicit and inappropriate remarks towards her during a journey.
The incident gained attention after a post on X highlighted the woman's account and shared a video recording of the alleged encounter.
According to the viral social media video, the woman recorded the driver as she was getting out of the autorickshaw. In the video, the driver can allegedly be heard making obscene and inappropriate comments directed at the woman.
The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing strong reactions from users who condemned the alleged behaviour and called for action against the driver.
As the video went viral, Mumbai Police took note of the incident and responded through their official social media handle.
In their reply, police asked the complainant to share her contact details through a direct message so that the matter could be investigated further.
The response was welcomed by many users who called for swift action against those responsible for harassment in public spaces.
