A 28-year-old lawyer was killed in a tragic road accident in Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, on Monday evening, sparking protests and causing major traffic disruption, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Ashok Lohar, a resident of Sector 12, Kharghar.

He was returning home on his motorcycle with a friend when the incident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses, a speeding dumper carrying debris ran over Lohar on the road from CBD Belapur towards Central Park.

He reportedly came into the vehicle's blind spot, and before he could react, the rear wheel crushed him. The impact was severe, and he died on the spot.

His friend, who was riding pillion, was thrown off the motorcycle due to the force of the collision.

Driver flees the scene

In a disturbing development, the dumper driver abandoned the vehicle and fled immediately after the accident, leaving behind the damaged motorcycle and drawing a large crowd at the scene.

Officials from the Kharghar Police Station, along with riot control personnel, reached the spot and brought the situation under control after discussions with protesters.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered against the absconding driver. Teams have been formed to trace him, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined.
