At least 11 people died and 20 others were injured after a tempo carrying wedding guests collided with a speeding container truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said, reported the PTI.
The incident took place near Dhaniwari village in Dahanu taluka around 4 pm. The Eicher tempo was reportedly carrying more than 50 passengers who were travelling to attend an engagement ceremony of Balaram Jairam Dandekar from Bapugaon Khadkipada village.
According to police, the impact of the collision was severe, causing both vehicles to overturn and trapping several passengers underneath the wreckage.
Senior Inspector Amar Patil of Kasa police station said 11 people were killed in the accident, while 20 injured passengers were rushed to Kasa Upazila Hospital and nearby medical facilities.
Preliminary findings suggest that overloading of passengers, high speed, a narrow stretch of road, and loss of control by the tempo driver may have contributed to the crash.
Following the collision, chaotic scenes unfolded on the busy highway as local residents, police teams and emergency responders rushed to the spot. Rescue operations were carried out to pull victims from the mangled vehicles.
Officials said five people died on the spot, while six others succumbed to injuries later. Several injured passengers remain in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the accident. The tragic incident has turned what was meant to be a celebratory journey into a scene of mourning for the families involved.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, two Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel and a person they had detained died after a speeding trailer rammed into their motorcycle on the Ajmer-Bhilwara National Highway in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, officials said, the news agency reported.
According to the police, the motorcycle carrying GRP head constable Lekhraj, constable Ravindra and the detained person - identified as Chhotu Bhil - was hit from behind by the trailer, killing them on the spot, officials said.
