Social vitriol
On Tuesday, January 30, Shahane had tweeted, "Today, 70 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi, 78, unarmed, was shot in cold blood by a 36-year-old armed assassin. Hate killed Gandhi but not his legacy. India is still proud to be known as the land of the Mahatma. Hate loses! Bapu shath shath naman in your memory."
The tweet saw numerous responses, including several critical and negative. But Shahane was offended by the response of one particular person, which was full of abuse and expletives. The twitter handle of the said online abuser is @Pintuku44889630.
The actress named and shamed the troll on various social media platforms, before approaching the police. Shahane told mid-day, "Somewhere, we have to take a stand and raise our voice against such people. These trolls don't have a face and real identity, and they take advantage of this."
Complaint lodged
The actress has lodged a complaint with the Versova police against the troll, recording her statement before the cops on Wednesday morning. A case has been registered under sections 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and 67 of the IT Act. DCP Paramjit Dahiya said, "A case has been registered, and our team is investigating the matter."
