A 125 mm Mahanagar Gas pipeline burst near Majiwada Metro Station and Viviana Mall in Hardas Nagar, Thane West, on Friday morning, leading to a gas leak, officials said.

The incident was reported at around 5.42 am on September 4, 2026, while road excavation work was being carried out on the service road as part of the metro project.

After the pipeline was damaged, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) workers reached the spot and stopped the gas supply through the affected pipeline to prevent further leakage.

Repair work on the damaged pipeline is currently underway.

Fire brigade and disaster management teams at spot

According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), personnel from the Vartak Nagar Police Station, MGL and the Thane Fire Brigade were present at the site.

The fire brigade deployed one fire vehicle and one rescue vehicle, while staff from the disaster management cell reached the location with a pickup vehicle.

The teams are monitoring the situation and assisting with safety measures while the repair work continues.

Gas supply to 25-30 buildings affected

According to MGL officials, gas supply to around 25 to 30 buildings in the area will remain suspended until repairs to the damaged pipeline are completed.

MGL officials said efforts are being made to complete the repair work as soon as possible and restore the gas supply.

Residents in the affected buildings have been advised to cooperate with the authorities until the pipeline repair work is completed, officials said.

MGL raises CNG price by Rs 2 per kg, domestic PNG by Rs 1 in Mumbai

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) had on Monday announced a Rs 2 per kg increase in CNG prices and a Rs 1 per SCM increase in domestic PNG prices across its geographical areas, citing a rise in input gas costs linked to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The revised CNG price will be Rs 88 per kg in and around Mumbai. The new rate will come into effect from midnight on August 31, an official statement said.

MGL said there has been significant demand for CNG, with a major portion of the gas required for the CNG segment being sourced through imported spot Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG).

According to the company, the ongoing crisis in the Middle East has led to a significant rise in international-index-linked gas prices. This has increased the cost of sourcing gas to meet the growing demand for CNG.
