The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Maharashtra has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a housing project for allegedly failing to process solid waste and dumping garbage in the open, officials said.

Waste processing facility found non-functional during inspection

The KDMC had received several complaints that the Titwala-based housing society's garbage collection and waste processing facility was frequently non-functional and remained shut, an official release stated, PTI reported.

An inspection of the premises on July 9 revealed that the waste processing centre at the housing project was not operational, the civic body said.

Action taken for violation of Solid Waste Management Rules

The civic body said action was initiated against the project's developing company after it was found violating provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules.

Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, notified by the state's Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, large housing societies are required to process and scientifically dispose of the waste generated within their premises.

Housing project failed to comply despite notices: KDMC

The KDMC said the housing project had been issued notices earlier but failed to comply with the statutory requirements, leading to the imposition of the penalty.

The civic body has reiterated that housing societies must ensure proper waste segregation, processing and disposal to prevent open dumping and environmental hazards.

Moshi garbage depot tragedy disrupts waste collection across Pimpri-Chinchwad

The impact of the devastating accident at the Moshi Garbage Depot is now being felt across Maharashtra's Pimpri-Chinchwad city, with the city's solid waste management system facing severe disruption. Following the collapse of a massive mound of legacy waste onto the administrative building of the waste-to-energy plant, routine operations at the depot have been significantly affected as rescue operations continue.

The Moshi depot in Pune district handles a substantial portion of the city's daily municipal waste.

However, the ongoing rescue work, the movement of heavy machinery, and safety restrictions at the accident site have disrupted the regular processing and disposal of garbage. As a result, waste collection vehicles are facing delays in unloading garbage, affecting the city's daily collection schedule.

Several residential societies, housing complexes, and densely populated neighbourhoods have reported that garbage has not been collected for the past two to three days. Overflowing household bins, particularly those containing wet waste, have led to foul odour and growing concerns over sanitation. Residents fear that the situation could worsen during the ongoing monsoon, increasing the risk of mosquito breeding, flies, and the spread of diseases.

Complaints from citizens have surged on the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's helpline, ward offices, and social media platforms. Residents have expressed frustration over the irregular waste collection and have urged the civic administration to immediately put in place alternative arrangements to restore normal services.
