Two women were killed and four others injured when a speeding dumper hit them in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Monday, police said, reported news agency PTI.

The accident took place at around 9.30 am at Sativali in Vasai area, an official from Valiv police station said, adding the dumper driver was detained, reported PTI.

The two women, both in their 40s, were on way to their workplace when the dumper coming at a high speed from the wrong direction ran over them and also hit some other persons, he said.

Police reached to the spot after being alerted and sent the bodies to a government hospital for postmortem, reported PTI.

The injured persons were shifted to a nearby hospital where they were undergoing treatment, reported PTI.

Some persons present at the spot caught hold of the dumper driver and handed him over to police, the official said, reported PTI.

An FIR was registered against the dumper driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act, the police said.

Meanwhile, one person was killed and three others were injured when a truck toppled on their car on the Mumbai-Nashik highway in Maharashtra's Thane district in the wee hours of Sunday, police said, reported PTI.

The accident took place at around 1.30 am at Mankoli on the highway when the car was heading towards Nashik while the truck was going towards Mumbai, police inspector Mahesh Patil said, reported PTI.

The truck, having registration number of Karnataka, skidded and fell on the car, he said.

One of the car occupants was crushed to death while three other persons received injuries and they were rushed to a hospital in Bhiwandi, the official said, reported PTI.

The body was sent to a government hospital for postmortem, he said.
