The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on illegal and misbranded cosmetic products, seizing stocks worth Rs 34.61 lakh in coordinated raids across Satara and Mumbai.
The action follows the FDA's recent drive against illegal drugs and pharmaceutical violations. Officials said the operation targeted cosmetics carrying misleading claims, lacking mandatory statutory details or being manufactured without valid licences.
The biggest seizure was reported from Karad in Satara district, where FDA officials raided Rajlaxmi Telecommunication on June 12 following a tip-off. Cosmetic products worth Rs 29.45 lakh were found stocked for sale. Officials found discrepancies between information printed on outer cartons and bottle labels.
Several products lacked batch numbers, manufacturing dates, and manufacturer details, leading investigators to classify them as prima facie misbranded cosmetics.
The stock was prohibited from sale pending investigation.
In a separate raid at âBeauty Centre' in Crawford Market on June 13, FDA officials seized cosmetic products worth Rs 1.20 lakh. The products allegedly carried misleading claims and lacked essential statutory information, including batch numbers, licence details and manufacturer particulars.
Among the seized products were essential oil blends marketed for breast enlargement, butt enhancement and fat burning.

Another operation at Radiant Creations in Kandivli West uncovered the alleged manufacture and storage of drugs and cosmetics without the required licences. Cosmetics, raw materials and machinery worth '3.96 lakh were seized. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said the department follows a "zero tolerance" policy towards products that compromise public health and warned that strict action would continue against manufacturers, sellers, and stockist of substandard, misleading or unlicensed products.
