Maharashtra: Lion Bharat dies during treatment at Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Centre in Nagpur

A male lion named Bharat, who had been battling paralysis, anaemia and septicaemia, died while undergoing treatment at the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Gorewada in Nagpur on Monday afternoon.

Bharat was brought to the Gorewada Project on May 23 following a recommendation from the veterinary committee at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali and orders from the Chief Wildlife Warden and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Maharashtra.

Bharat was in critical condition

According to Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Pandurang Pakhale of the Gorewada Zoo, Bharat was in critical condition when he arrived at the centre.

He was suffering from paralysis, anaemia, septicaemia and other infectious diseases. Veterinary officers at Gorewada closely monitored his condition and provided medication and medical care.

Special efforts were also made to improve his mobility using a sling system to lift and support him.

Intensive treatment provided

Bharat received treatment for paralysis, anaemia and septicaemia, along with nutritional management, physiotherapy and wound care.

Despite continuous medical monitoring and treatment, he did not consume adequate quantities of food, further complicating his condition.

Lion dies during treatment

Bharat died at around 2 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at the hospital of the Wildlife Rescue Centre.

A post-mortem examination was conducted by Dr Vinod Dhut, Dr P M Sonkusare and Dr Sujit Kolangay from the Wildlife Research and Training Centre.

Following the examination, Bharat's remains were cremated in the presence of Gorewada Zoo officials.
