The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a five-day weather forecast warning of widespread thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, gusty winds and isolated extreme rain events across several parts of Maharashtra from Tuesday to Saturday.
According to the bulletin issued at 1:24 pm, most districts are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.
The Konkan region, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, is expected to witness the most intense weather activity.
Mumbai is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at isolated locations. Similar conditions are forecast for Thane and Palghar, followed by continued thunderstorms and moderate rain over the next few days.
Raigad has been flagged for heavy to very heavy rainfall at multiple locations, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain at isolated places.
Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also expected to receive heavy rainfall spells, with isolated intense showers continuing through the week.
The Ghats of Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Nashik are expected to receive heavy rainfall spells, especially in isolated pockets, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30-50 kmph in some areas.
The IMD has cautioned that persistent rainfall in these regions could increase the risk of landslides, particularly in vulnerable hill slopes.
Interior districts, including Pune, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Latur, Dharashiv, Beed, Nanded and parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to witness frequent thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds.
Some areas may also receive moderate to heavy rainfall, especially on June 23-25, before conditions gradually ease in certain pockets by the end of the forecast period.
While most regions will see rainfall, isolated heatwave conditions are likely in parts of Akola, Amravati, and Wardha during the early part of the forecast period. These districts may simultaneously experience thunderstorms with strong winds.
The IMD has issued an impact-based advisory warning of potential localised flooding in low-lying and urban areas, flash flood risks, uprooting of weak trees, power outages and transport disruptions across affected districts.
The department has also cautioned farmers about possible crop damage due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, advising immediate harvesting of mature crops where possible, securing stored produce, and avoiding chemical spraying during unstable weather conditions.
The forecast remains valid from 8:30 am on June 23 to 8:30 am on June 28, with authorities urging citizens to remain cautious as weather conditions continue to evolve across the state.
Very light rain: 0.1 to 2.4 mm
Light rain: 2.5 to 15.5 mm
Moderate rain: 15.6 to 64.4 mm
Heavy rain: 64.5 to 115.5 mm
Very heavy rain: 115.6 to 204.4 mm
Extremely heavy rain: 204.5 mm and above
These classifications are used in weather bulletins and forecasts to indicate the likely intensity of rainfall and associated risks, including urban flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to transport and daily life during intense weather events.
