A 60-year-old woman was killed after she came into contact with the rear tyre of a (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking) BEST wet-lease bus at the ST Office traffic signal in Worli on Monday, September 7, morning, according to the BEST Command and Control Centre.
The incident occurred around 11.25 am, when the bus, operating on route A-154/42, was travelling from Byculla railway station towards Lotus Junction. The bus, bearing registration number MH-03-CV-5796, was being operated by a wet-lease driver from Mumbai Central depot.
According to the accident report, the bus was halted at the ST Office traffic signal when a taxi was standing alongside it. The woman, identified as Vanmala Sabale, 60, was reportedly alighting from the taxi while the signal was red.
When the signal turned green, the bus driver moved the vehicle forward, following which Sabale came into contact with the bus's left rear tyre. She sustained severe head injuries and suffered bleeding from her head and ear.
The bus conductor immediately took her to Nair Hospital for treatment. However, the doctors declared her dead at around 12.15 pm before treatment could be initiated.
Following the incident, BEST officials, including the Assistant Depot Manager (Worli), Assistant Depot Manager (Central Depot), Accident Officer Lad, and representatives of the wet-lease operator, were sent to the accident site and the hospital for further action.
The incident is under investigation by the authorities concerned.
Earlier in July, a BEST CNG bus hit a road divider after the driver allegedly swerved to avoid a motorcyclist who suddenly came in front of the vehicle in Borivali East, officials said.
The incident took place at around 11.20 pm near Daulat Nagar bus stop while the bus was travelling from Vaishali Nagar to Borivali East.
According to the accident report, the motorcyclist entered the bus's path from the left lane without warning.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver turned the steering wheel to the right, causing the bus to strike the divider and become lodged on it.
A towing vehicle was later called to remove the bus, which was taken back to the Magathane depot.
No injuries to passengers, the bus crew or other road users were reported in connection with the incident.
