Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday directed officials to prioritise a citizen-friendly administrative layout while renovating the former Air India building, which is proposed to house several state government departments, reported the PTI.

Chairing a review meeting at his official residence, Varsha, the Chief Minister said the redevelopment should focus on making government services faster, more efficient and easier for the public to access.

CM Fadnavis instructed Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal to convene a meeting of the concerned departments and prepare a comprehensive plan before a final decision is taken on the use of the building.

He said departments should be identified for relocation in a way that it improves administrative efficiency while ensuring greater convenience for citizens, the news agency reported.

Focus on efficient public services

According to an official statement, the Chief Minister stressed that the administrative structure inside the renovated building should be simple, efficient and centred on the needs of the public.

He said a final decision on shifting government offices would be taken only after detailed planning and consultation.

The meeting included presentations by architects on the proposed renovation of the former Air India building.

Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, Minister of State Indranil Naik, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and other senior officials attended the review meeting.

The project is expected to create a modern administrative space aimed at improving government functioning and public service delivery, officials said, according to the PTI.

Maharashtra pushes for citizen-centric governance

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has introduced five key process re-engineering reforms aimed at making public services faster, simpler and more accessible while reducing the need for citizens to visit government offices.

Under the new framework, all administrative departments have been directed to adopt the reforms while implementing the Government Process Re-engineering (GPR) initiative.

According to a government resolution issued by the Planning Department, departments must increasingly rely on digital verification systems so that citizens can complete applications without physically visiting government offices.

The move is intended to improve convenience, transparency and the efficiency of government services and welfare schemes.

Departments have been instructed to simplify application forms by automatically filling information from government databases wherever possible.

The databases to be used include Aadhaar, Maha-Samanvay, DigiLocker and other government digital platforms.
