Doctors at Sion Hospital have scheduled March 23 for the surgery of Shabana, the mother of 12-year-old Parwez Ali. The operation was initially planned for March 2, but the date was postponed due to the complexity of the procedure.
"The patient has rectovaginal and recto-urethral fistula, which requires surgeons from the gynaecology, general surgery, and plastic surgery departments. Coordinating the schedules of all three departments can be challenging as each has OPDs on different days. We are also bringing in some specialists from outside. Now that everyone's availability has been confirmed, the surgery will take place on March 23," said Dr Pramod Ingale, dean of Sion Hospital.
Doctors have decided to carry out multiple procedures in a single surgery instead of conducting separate operations.
"The combined procedure will address complications involving her abdomen, gynaecological system and urinary tract. Although the surgery is complex, the specialists involved are highly skilled, which reduces the risk. Operating multiple times would increase the risk of infection and trauma to the body," said one of the treating doctors.
According to the medical team, performing all procedures together will also reduce medical costs and prevent repeated hospital admissions.
Meanwhile, support from across Mumbai has been pouring in for Parwez, who has been seeking help for his mother's treatment. Parwez said he has been carefully using the donations, maintaining records of all expenses.
"I have bought 15 colostomy bags, bandages and medicines, and paid for laboratory tests. So far, I have spent Rs 12,000 from the amount received. I am using the money carefully and not spending unnecessarily. I am grateful to everyone who has helped us," he told mid-day.
Over the past 10 days, citizens have collectively contributed around Rs 1.5 lakh between February 28 and March 6.
