The new local train station between Thane and Mulund will soon come up as the Centre on Friday gave it an in-principle approval for which Maharashtra CM Fadnavis thanked PM Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Fadnavis on Friday announced that in-principle approval has been granted for the construction of a new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund.
The Chief Minister shared the update through a post on X, calling the development a "new momentum" for transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
In a message, posted on X, CM Fadnavis thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the project in principle.
He said the cooperation between the Central and Maharashtra government would help make the transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region more efficient and dynamic.
In a letter to CM Fadnavis, Vaishnaw wrote, "Please refer to the discussion held with you regarding the construction of a new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund. You will be pleased to know that in-principle approval has been granted for the construction of the new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund."
It is believe the proposed station will improve suburban rail connectivity and help ease congestion on one of Mumbai's busiest railway corridors.
The project is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters travelling between Mumbai and Thane.
The station was first conceptualised in 2019 and will be developed on approximately 14.83 acres of land belonging to the Thane Mental Hospital on the western side between Thane and Mulund.
Initially approved under Thane Smart Projects Limited (TSPL), the project has in the past faced repeated delays.
According to earlier projections, the new station could reduce high passenger footfall at Thane and Mulund station once the operations begin.
The upcoming station is expected to also serve commuters travelling from areas such as Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road and Wagle Estate.
The project is expected to improve integration between different modes of transport and make daily commuting more convenient for residents in the region.
