The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its warning for Mumbai to an orange alert as intense monsoon activity continued to lash the city and surrounding regions on Wednesday. The financial capital woke up to another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, disrupting traffic and causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas.

According to the latest IMD bulletin issued at 1.06 pm, Mumbai and Thane have been placed under an orange alert until Thursday 9 am, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places. Raigad and Palghar have been issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.

Several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Andheri, Goregaon, Borivali, Ghatkopar, Mira Road, and Thane, received intense showers during the early morning hours. Mumbai City recorded an average of 61.13 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 am, while the eastern suburbs received 86.66 mm and the western suburbs 86.90 mm.

Thane recorded 99.2 mm of rainfall during the 23-hour period ending at 7.30 am on Wednesday.

The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rainfall through the day, though sudden heavy spells and gusty winds may continue in Mumbai. A high tide of 3.77 metres is expected at 5.17 pm on Wednesday, followed by another high tide of 3.49 metres at 7 am on Thursday. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas, and avoid travel during peak rain spells.

Heavy rainfall likely across Konkan

In the Konkan region, Ratnagiri is likely to receive heavy rainfall at a few places, while Sindhudurg may see heavy rainfall at isolated places. All coastal districts remain under a very likely probability for significant rainfall activity.

Other parts of Maharashtra

An orange alert has been issued for Nashik, with a red alert for its ghats, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with gusty winds. The ghats of Pune and Satara are also under a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Many other districts, including Dhule, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Ahilyanagar, Satara, Sangli, and parts of Vidarbha, including Chandrapur, are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) with moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places. Rain intensity is likely to reduce gradually from Friday onwards.

The Regional Disaster Management Cell and civic bodies have advised residents to stay away from low-lying areas, avoid venturing out during thunderstorms, and secure loose objects. Farmers have been asked to complete the harvesting of mature crops and ensure proper drainage in fields.

As the monsoon remains active over the state, the IMD has urged citizens to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
