BMC’s 'Model Parking' initiative launched in Mumbai's Dadar; top civic officials warn of crackdown from July 1

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday announced the launch of a pilot project to develop the public parking lot on Jagannath Sawant Marg in Mumbai's Dadar West into a ‘model parking facility', officials said, adding that it will launch a crackdown against illegal parking lots from July 1.

An official statement said that the civic body has undertaken several measures at the parking lot, including a cleanliness drive, installation of additional lighting and CCTV cameras, and enhanced safety provisions for women motorists.

BMC has also announced a 50 per cent discount on monthly parking passes for local residents.

A total of 400 discounted passes will be made available in the first phase.

According to civic officials, the initiative aims to strengthen public parking infrastructure and promote the use of authorised parking spaces. If the pilot project receives a positive response, similar measures could be introduced at other public parking facilities across Mumbai.

New markings and signage to improve parking discipline

The model parking project is being implemented under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar said the Jagannath Sawant Marg facility has parking capacity for around 1,000 three-wheelers and four-wheelers, along with 12 two-wheelers.

As part of the initiative, no-parking zones in the surrounding area are being made more visible through red-and-black curb markings. Red and white road markings are also being introduced to facilitate odd-even date-based parking arrangements.

The civic body has also increased the number of directional signboards to help motorists easily locate the parking facility.

Action against illegal parking from July 1

Bangar said more than 200 'No Parking' signboards have already been installed in areas including Kotwal Garden, Kabutarkhana, Ganesh Peth Galli and stretches between TR Sawant Marg and Bal Govinddas Marg, all of which have been designated as no-parking zones.

He added that from July 1, traffic police will initiate preventive and penal action against vehicles found parked in no-parking areas around Jagannath Sawant Marg.

To further improve convenience, the civic administration is also exploring the possibility of introducing valet parking services at the facility.

Officials said the success of the pilot project could pave the way for similar model parking facilities across Mumbai, helping improve parking discipline and reduce traffic bottlenecks in congested areas.
