The Virar-Dahanu Road Quadrupling Project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III) has achieved 64 per cent physical progress, with civil and infrastructure works gaining momentum across the corridor, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) said on Wednesday.
The project, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 3,578 crore, is aimed at augmenting railway capacity along the Virar-Dahanu Road corridor of Western Railway.
"With physical progress now at 64 per cent, work is advancing simultaneously across bridges, stations, earthwork and other railway. The quadrupling will substantially strengthen suburban rail capacity between Virar and Dahanu Road and cater to the growing mobility requirements of this corridor," said MRVC OSD and Chief Manager (Corporate Coordination) Sunil G Udasi.
According to the July 2026 progress update, around 30.35 lakh cubic metres of earthwork and 2.48 lakh cubic metres of blanketing have been completed. The project has so far recorded the completion of four road underbridges (RUBs), one road overbridge (ROB), 13 major bridges and 54 minor bridges.
Around 34.7 km of drainage works have also been completed. Overall earthwork under the two major earthwork and bridge packages has reached 98 per cent, while 72 bridges and RUBs under these packages have been completed.
Significant progress has been recorded on Important Bridges No 92 and 93.
At Bridge No 92, the entire substructure, comprising 576 piles, 68 pile caps, and 68 piers, has been completed. The entire superstructure, comprising 264 girders and 132 deck slabs, has also been completed.
At Bridge No 93, a total of 476 piles have been completed, while work on the superstructure is underway. The ROB at LC-55A was also completed in July 2026.
Virar station is undergoing extensive remodelling and capacity enhancement as part of the project.
Work on the new station building and elevated deck is progressing, with 36 columns constructed, 160 girders launched, and around 2,000 square metres of deck slab cast.
A major milestone has been achieved with Platforms 3A and 4A widened from 6.5 metres to 10 metres and extended by 60 metres to accommodate 15-car suburban trains.
The work has been completed and 15-car EMU services between Virar and Dahanu Road have commenced from these platforms.
Platform 5B and the foot overbridge (FOB) between Virar and Vaitarna (Narangi Gate) have also been completed and commissioned.
Station and associated infrastructure works are also progressing at Vaitarna, Saphale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon, and Dahanu Road.
Several station and service buildings, staff quarters, signalling facilities, FOB components, and utility structures have been completed or handed over. Work on remaining platforms, FOBs, circulating areas, and allied infrastructure is underway.
The quadrupling project will add two railway lines along the Virar-Dahanu Road corridor, substantially increasing capacity and supporting enhanced suburban services in the rapidly developing northern part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
