Deploying boats to inspect submerged transformers, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has restored electricity to more than 2 lakh consumers in the flood-ravaged Vasai-Virar region within 12 hours of floodwaters receding, officials said.
As reported by PTI, heavy torrential rains pounding the region for five straight days had forced the MSEDCL to suspend supply as a safety measure temporarily, and it launched a round-the-clock restoration operation from Wednesday as the weather cleared, Ajit Igatpurikar, deputy chief public relations officer, Kalyan Region, said on Thursday.
Chandramani Mishra, chief engineer of the Kalyan Zone while briefing about the incident said, "In several inundated localities, our teams had to use boats to inspect the submerged equipment. We systematically checked the underground cables, transformers, power lines, and poles damaged by the floods, carrying out immediate repairs or replacements wherever necessary," as cited by PTI.
As per the MSEDCL release, 528 transformers were submerged under floodwaters, out of which 62 were completely damaged and had to be replaced immediately.
It also stated, 91 electricity poles had collapsed, requiring the erection of new poles and the rebuilding of overhead power lines.
Officials also said that power was restored to more than 2 lakh consumers only after rigorous testing of all the submerged electrical equipment to prevent any safety hazards, as per PTI.
Mishra further added that work is underway on a war footing to restore power to the remaining affected pockets.
Incessant rains battered Palghar district earlier this week, inundating several neighbourhoods and submerging railway tracks, affecting Western Railway services.
The Central Railway (CR) refunded Rs 5.91 crore to 79,747 passengers on Monday who were unable to travel because of the disruptions as relentless rainfall crippled Mumbai's transport, with train services being hit by landslides and flooding.
CR's Mumbai Division alone processed refunds worth Rs 2.86 crore for 37,330 passengers. The Western Railway (WR) also processed refunds for 7135 passengers, amounting to Rs 52.65 lakh.
Till 4 pm, the disruption had led to the cancellation of 14 trains, short termination of five, short origination of five, diversion of 13 and rescheduling of eight services. In view of the cloudburst warning issued for the Nashik region, CR also deployed additional personnel across the Igatpuri-Nashik-Manmad section as a precautionary measure.
