Mumbai: Woman vendor, child killed after SUV crashes into vegetable stall in Mulund

A woman vegetable vendor and a child were killed after a 74-year-old man allegedly lost control of his Kia Seltos and crashed into a roadside stall in Mulund West on Thursday night.

SUV crashes into stall outside housing society

The accident took place on ACC Road in Tambe Nagar when the elderly motorist was driving the SUV out of a residential society.

According to police, the vehicle suddenly veered into a vegetable stall outside the society gate, knocking down people standing nearby.

One of the victims, identified as Jyoti Shah, suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Another woman who was standing near the stall was carrying a child in her arms when the SUV struck. The child fell during the impact and sustained a severe head injury.

Child succumbs to injuries during treatment

While the child was initially admitted to hospital and kept under observation, he later succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll in the accident to two. The woman is undergoing treatment.

Driver taken into custody; probe underway

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhaysingh Deshmukh (Zone VII) said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

As per the preliminary investigation, police suspect the driver lost control while taking the vehicle out of the society premises, which led to the incident.

"The accused immediately shifted the injured woman to a hospital after the accident. He was subsequently taken into custody and further legal action is underway," the DCP said.
