With the process of Census 2027 scheduled to begin in May, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday announced that it plans major public outreach drive in Mumbai with Bollywood celebrities, social media and special initiatives.

According to an official statement, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma has directed the civic administration to undertake extensive publicity efforts to ensure that Census 2027 reaches every citizen.

He stressed the need for strong preparation and effective communication strategies across Mumbai.

Celebrities and influencers suggested

The statement said, to ensure that Census 2027 reaches every citizen, extensive awareness and publicity campaigns would be organised.

Dr Sharma called for the support of prominent and influential personalities, including Bollywood celebrities and sportspersons, to increase public participation.

Dr Sharma directed that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) machinery should make thorough preparations to effectively communicate the technologically advanced Census 2027 to the general public. He emphasised that teams appointed at the ward level must make special efforts for wide publicity and outreach.

Dr Sharma highlighted the importance of involving influential personalities, including Bollywood celebrities and sportspersons, to encourage greater public participation.

He said such figures could play a key role in spreading awareness and motivating citizens to take part in the census process.

Workshop at Byculla Zoo

The directions were issued during a workshop held at the penguin enclosure of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo also known as the Byculla Zoo on April 27, 2026. Senior civic officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioners and deputy commissioners, were present at the meeting.

Census schedule announced

Under the first phase in the jurisdiction of BMC, self-enumeration will be conducted from May 1 to May 15, 2026. This will be followed by house listing and house enumeration from May 16 to June 14, 2026.

Officials have been instructed to use videos and social media platforms to appeal to citizens to participate in the census. Departments have also been asked to coordinate with key personalities in advance and ensure their involvement from the beginning of the process.

The officials said that the Mumbai civic body aims to maximise participation by making the process more accessible and widely known.
