The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena corporator Hanumant Jagdale was elected as the Leader of the House during the general body meeting of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Monday, reported the PTI.
The meeting was chaired by Mayor Sharmila Pimplolkar. The announcement was made during the session attended by members of the 131-member civic body.
During the same meeting, Shanu Pathan of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) was declared the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the corporation, according to the PTI.
The appointment of the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition formally sets the stage for the functioning of the new general body.
In the civic body elections held in January, the Shiv Sena secured a clear majority by winning 75 of the 131 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 28 seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured nine seats.
The NCP (SP) won 12 seats and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen won five seats.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) secured one seat, and one independent candidate also emerged victorious.
With a comfortable majority, Shiv Sena is expected to play a dominant role in the functioning of the Thane civic body.
Shiv Sena's Sharmila Pimpalolkar was earlier elected the mayor of Thane, while BJP's Krishna Patil was elected as the deputy mayor in an unopposed election held this month.
The election was held under the chairmanship of the Presiding Officer and District Collector Dr. Shrikrishnanath Panchal.
The election was conducted during a special general body meeting convened at 11.30 am at the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Auditorium of the Thane Municipal Corporation.
Municipal Secretary Manish Joshi and senior civic officials were also present at the meeting.
The official announcement of the results was made by Dr. Panchal following the completion of the election process.
After the declaration, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao congratulated the newly elected mayor and the deputy mayor. He welcomed them by presenting tulsi saplings.
