Three people were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW car crashed on Mumbai Coastal Road in the early hours of Sunday, September 20, police said.
The accident was reported at around 5.20 am when the car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. According to information provided by the Coastal Road Control Room, the vehicle was allegedly travelling at high speed when the driver lost control near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College.
All four occupants of the car were rushed to the civic-run Nair Hospital following the crash. The hospital later confirmed that three of them had been declared brought dead, while the fourth occupant was admitted in the trauma ward in a critical condition.
The deceased have been identified as Shanay Gajjal, 21, and Dhirya Seth, 17. The identity of the third deceased, a man believed to be around 25 years old, was not immediately known.
The injured occupant, an unidentified man aged around 20, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the trauma ward. His condition was reported to be critical, according to information obtained from the hospital's Chief Medical Officer.
The crash was reported to the Coastal Road Control Room at 5.20 am, with an update issued at around 8.40 am.
Initial information indicated that the BMW was travelling towards Haji Ali from Marine Drive when the accident occurred. The vehicle reportedly crashed after the driver lost control while travelling at high speed near Lotus Jetty.
The impact left all four occupants injured, following which emergency services took them to Nair Hospital for treatment. Medical staff later confirmed three fatalities.
Police have begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Further details about the vehicle, including its speed and the exact sequence of events leading up to the accident, are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58-kilometre road corridor connecting Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The road has become an important route between south Mumbai and the western suburbs. The section where the accident occurred is near Lotus Jetty and Lala Lajpatrai College.
