The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) observed Water Conservation Day on Friday, August 21, by administering a collective pledge during its General Body meeting at Rajmata Jijau Hall, officials said.
August 21 is observed as Water Conservation Day across Maharashtra, while August 15 to 21 is marked as Water Conservation Week. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of saving water, protecting water sources and improving groundwater levels.
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil led the water conservation pledge along with Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Pawar, civic office-bearers, corporators, municipal officials and journalists present at the meeting.
Patil appealed to citizens to make water conservation a part of their daily lives and take conscious steps to prevent wastage. She stressed that individual efforts are important for protecting the city's water resources amid rising demand.
The NMMC said Water Conservation Week is intended to encourage public participation in efforts to prevent water scarcity, improve groundwater levels and take soil and water conservation measures to the grassroots.
The campaign draws inspiration from the message âPaani Adva, Paani Jirva', which means stopping water and allowing it to percolate into the ground. The message was promoted by former Maharashtra Chief Minister and water conservation expert Sudhakarrao Naik.
Rainwater conservation and groundwater recharge are among the key measures highlighted by the civic body to tackle water scarcity.
As part of the week-long campaign, the NMMC installed banners at various locations and used digital hoardings to spread awareness about water conservation.
Similar pledges were also administered at the NMMC headquarters and at all water reservoirs under the civic body's jurisdiction.
The water conservation pledge calls on citizens to treat the conservation of water and soil as a shared responsibility towards the sustainable development of Maharashtra and the country.
It urges people to use water carefully in their daily lives, avoid wastage, conserve rainwater by allowing it to percolate into the ground and protect existing water sources.
The NMMC also stressed the need to create greater awareness within communities and strengthen water literacy among citizens.
With Navi Mumbai undergoing rapid urbanisation and facing growing demand for water, the civic body's campaign highlights the need for responsible water use.
The NMMC said sustainable water management will require both institutional measures and active participation from citizens. The Water Conservation Week campaign therefore seeks to encourage people to make water-saving practices part of their everyday lives.
