The Election Commission of India has decided to hold bye-elections in five assembly constituencies in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab and West Bengal. The seats in these constituencies have fallen vacant due to the death or resignation of MLAs who were previously holding the offices.
As per the official release by the Election Commission of India (ECI), five different assembly constituencies have been directed to hold the bye-elections. ECI has also directed that elections in all the five constituencies should be concluded successfully before June 25, 2025.
The following constituencies are therefore directed to hold bye-elections
Kadi (Scheduled Caste): Due to the death of Shri Karsanbhai Punjabbhai Solanki
As per the circular issued by the Election Commission of India, the last date for filing nominations is 2 June 2025; scrutiny of nominations is June 3, 2025; the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 5, 2025. ECI also directed that polling will be held on 19 June 2025, counting of votes will be held on June 23, 2025, and the final date for completion of the elections in all the constituencies is on June 25, 2025.
The Commission has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs in the bye-elections at all polling stations. ECI has also issued a statement that adequate numbers of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available. Adding to it, the commission also said that all the steps have been taken to ensure that the poll is conducted smoothly.
Apart from voter identity card with EPIC number, 12 alternative identity cards like Aadhaar cards, driving licences, passports, etc., will be accepted for voter identification. The Commission also stated that "We have immediately implemented the Model Code of Conduct". " It is mandatory for candidates with criminal backgrounds to declare their information."
