With COVID-19 cases back on the rise again, India recorded 564 new cases in the last 24 hours. While the situation is not currently considered worrying, the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases has certainly made authorities more cautious.
Including the 564 cases recorded in the past 24 hours, the total number of active cases in India is now 4,866, as per the data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday. However, one major point of concern is the death toll, which has now reached seven during this period.
Of the seven casualties attributed to COVID-19, three are from Maharashtra, and two each are from Delhi and Karnataka. Six of the seven deceased were reportedly elderly individuals who had been suffering from serious illnesses for a long time. However, the seventh person who died was a five-year-old child who had serious pre-existing breathing issues.
The infographics released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that the highest number of cases are from Kerala (1,487), while other major states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have recorded 526, 436, and 213 cases respectively. West Bengal, on the other hand, has also been witnessing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with 538 active cases as of now. The state-wise breakdown of COVID-19 cases clearly shows that larger states are experiencing a surge, and high precautions should be taken by people with pre-existing conditions.
A positive aspect of the current scenario is that most of the active cases are being treated at home. Not many hospital admissions have been significantly reported.
Since 1 January 2025, almost 44 deaths have been reported; however, all the patients who have lost their lives had pre-existing health conditions.
Addressing the situation, serious technical review meetings were conducted on 2 and 3 June 2025. The meeting on rising COVID-19 cases was chaired by Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). The main objective of the meeting was to analyse the current situation in the country and to be prepared for anything that may arise.
