The Punjab Police on Thursday registered an FIR after a married couple was allegedly attacked by a pet Pitbull in the Ghuman Nagar area of Patiala, leaving both injured.
The brutal attack by the pet dog was captured in a CCTV at a house.
The CCTV footage shows, locals rushing to rescue the couple and fend off the Pitbull with sticks as it continued to attack the couple.
A woman was also seen coming out of the house with a stick but was unable to stop the dog from attacking. Two to three more people later arrive with sticks and manage to shield the injured couple.
According to the police, the couple had visited the property on Tuesday to inspect it for rent when the dog suddenly attacked them after the latch of the gate was opened, reported ANI.
Ankit Sabharwal, who was attacked by the dog said that he had visited the property with his wife to inspect it before taking it on rent. As soon as they arrived and opened the gate latch, the dog attacked them, leaving both him and his wife injured.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagjit Singh Randhawa said the FIR was registered against an unknown person as the victims did not know the name of the dog's owner.
However, the complaint mentions the house number of the residence in Ghuman Nagar where the dog is suspected to have been kept.
"We have registered an FIR. They don't know the owner's name, so they just registered it against unknown, but they have written that whosoever's home it is," DSP Randhawa said, reported ANI.
The DSP said police are investigating to establish the ownership of the dog, following which the complaint will be registered in the owner's name.
"We are currently investigating who owns the dog and we will then register the complaint against who is responsible," Randhawa said, reported ANI.
He added that the FIR was filed last night while police personnel were engaged in Independence Day-related preparation duties.
Meanwhile, Municipal Corporation Patiala Commissioner Pooja Syal Grewal termed the incident "very scary and regrettable" and said keeping ferocious dogs as pets is strictly prohibited.
She said the victim was lodging a complaint with the police and appropriate action would be taken against the dog's owner.
"Our health wing is already handling the registration process regularly, but following this incident, we intend to be even more vigilant," Grewal said, reported ANI.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
