Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the recently announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the development would contribute to restoring peace, stability and freedom of navigation in the West Asia region.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the conflict had caused significant economic disruptions globally and resulted in the loss of lives across several countries. He emphasised the importance of implementing the agreement and resolving the remaining issues through dialogue.
"I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries," PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister said India hopes the implementation of the understanding between Washington and Tehran will help restore stability in a region that remains critical to global trade, energy supplies and maritime security.
He also underlined the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commercial activity through key international shipping routes.
"India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce. We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement," Modi said.
The remarks reflect India's longstanding position of supporting diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts and maintaining stability in strategically important regions.
The Prime Minister's comments came after a major diplomatic breakthrough was announced between the United States and Iran.
US President Donald Trump stated that an agreement had been reached between the two countries, describing it as a significant step towards restoring peace and security in West Asia. He also suggested that the agreement could facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes for crude oil and energy supplies.
The development has drawn global attention because of the strategic importance of the Gulf region to international trade and energy markets.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also confirmed that an agreement had been reached and indicated that the formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 19.
According to Iranian officials, the text of the Memorandum of Understanding will be released after the signing ceremony. Tehran has also indicated that further negotiations on a comprehensive agreement would proceed after certain conditions related to the cessation of hostilities and other commitments are fulfilled.
Officials from both sides are expected to engage in additional discussions before the formal implementation phase begins.
The agreement has received support from several world leaders and international organisations.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa welcomed the development and called for its swift implementation. They stressed the importance of restoring freedom of navigation through key maritime corridors, describing it as vital for the global economy and international trade.
The announcement has also been viewed positively by governments concerned about the impact of regional instability on energy markets, supply chains and economic growth.
While the agreement has been widely welcomed as a positive diplomatic development, several issues remain under discussion and are expected to be addressed in subsequent rounds of negotiations.
Analysts note that the success of the agreement will largely depend on its implementation and the ability of both sides to resolve outstanding concerns through sustained dialogue.
For India, stability in West Asia remains particularly important due to its energy security interests, trade ties and the large Indian diaspora living and working across the region. Any improvement in regional security is likely to be closely monitored by policymakers and businesses alike.
