Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy and expressing solidarity with the families affected by the attacks.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi remembered those who lost their lives and reiterated India's commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
"25 years on from the horrific 9/11 attacks, we remember and honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed. Terrorism has claimed countless lives around the world. As a victim of cross-border terrorism, India has been at the forefront of this fight for several decades."
The Prime Minister added, "While the threat keeps evolving, our resolve and opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remain unwavering. We stand in solidarity with all efforts to combat this scourge," PM Modi said in the post.
Modi also shared glimpses from his 2014 visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
On September 11, 2001, four commercial aircraft were hijacked in a coordinated terror attack carried out by al-Qaida extremists.
Two of the planes were deliberately crashed into New York City's World Trade Centre. The impact brought down the iconic Twin Towers, which had been symbols of the country's economic strength.
A third aircraft struck the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, near Washington.
The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It was believed to have been headed towards the US capital, but passengers and crew members confronted the hijackers and attempted to regain control before the aircraft went down.
The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and had far-reaching consequences in the US and across the world.
Americans are observing the 25th anniversary by remembering those killed in the attacks and reflecting on their lasting impact.
Memorial events include wreath-laying ceremonies, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils and readings of victims' names. Volunteer initiatives are also being organised in their memory.
For many people, the anniversary remains a time of personal remembrance and mourning. Schools are also using the occasion to educate younger generations about the attacks and their consequences.
The tragedy not only caused immense personal grief but also triggered a decades-long aftermath that included wars and major geopolitical changes far beyond US shores.
As the 25th anniversary was observed, Modi's message also highlighted India's longstanding position against terrorism and its support for international efforts to counter the threat.
