An 11-year-old boy died after coming under the wheels of a truck while travelling on a motorcycle with his father and sister in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Tuesday, reported the PTI.
The accident took place in Hinjewadi on Monday afternoon as the family was travelling to the boy's classes.
According to the FIR, the boy was travelling with his father and sister on a motorcycle along Nande-Mhalunge Road when a truck allegedly hit their two-wheeler from behind.
The impact caused all three riders to fall. The boy came under the truck's rear wheel and died in the accident, police said.
However, CCTV footage of the incident appears to show a different sequence of events. The footage shows the motorcycle attempting to overtake the truck from the left before skidding on a damaged section of the road. The boy then fell beneath the truck's wheels, the news agency reported.
Despite the CCTV footage, police have registered a case against the truck driver for allegedly driving recklessly.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the condition of the road and the sequence captured on CCTV, as per the PTI.
The accident sparked anger among daily commuters travelling to Hinjewadi IT Park, with several blaming the civic authorities for failing to maintain the road properly.
Locals and commuters pointed to the broken stretch of Nande-Mhalunge Road, saying the condition of the road posed a serious risk to motorists.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and infrastructure in the rapidly developing Hinjewadi area, according to the PTI.
The victim, who lived in Maan near Hinjewadi, was travelling with his father and sister when the fatal accident occurred.
The boy's death has prompted renewed calls from commuters and residents for urgent repairs to damaged roads and improved safety measures in the area, as per the PTI.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, last week, three schoolgirls were killed after a private bus hit the two-wheeler they were travelling on near a school in Hinganghat town of Maharashtra's Wardha district, police said on Saturday, reported the PTI.
The accident took place on Friday morning near Ambedkar School, according to officials.
Police said the three girls were travelling on a two-wheeler when a private bus allegedly hit them from behind.
The impact caused the accident, resulting in the deaths of all three girls.
The bus driver was arrested following the incident, police said.
Further investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of the crash.
The deceased were identified as Samruddhi Rupak Dhamse, 15, Aruhi Raju Chavre, 17 and Misbah Javed Sheikh, 17. All three were residents of the local area, officials said.
The accident near a school has raised concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy vehicles in areas with a large number of students.
Police have arrested the private bus driver in connection with the accident.
