Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings to people across the country on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, wishing happiness, prosperity and success for all and expressing hope that the bond of love, affection and mutual trust remains forever unbreakable.

The Prime Minister shared his message on social media platform X as people across India marked the festival, which celebrates the bond between siblings.

"Heartfelt wishes on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. May this sacred festival bring happiness, prosperity, and success into all your lives. May the bond of love, affection, and mutual trust remain forever unbreakable - that is my heartfelt wish," PM Modi said.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin also extended his greetings on the occasion, saying the festival strengthens cultural values and family bonds.

"Heartfelt greetings to all fellow citizens on the sacred festival of Raksha Bandhan. This festival, embodying the affection, trust, and vow of protection between siblings, further strengthens our cultural values and familial bonds. May this sacred occasion bring love, joy, and prosperity into everyone's lives - that is our heartfelt wish," Nabin said.

Political leaders across the country extended greetings as families gathered to observe the festival and take part in traditional rituals associated with Raksha Bandhan.

Rajnath Singh highlights safety and dignity of women

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed his wishes, describing Raksha Bandhan as a festival reflecting India's cultural heritage and values.

"Heartfelt greetings on the sacred festival of Raksha Bandhan. This festival, embodying the unbreakable affection, mutual trust, and deep bond between brother and sister, beautifully reflects our rich cultural heritage and values. It also inspires us to remain committed to the honor, safety, and dignity of women. On this auspicious occasion, I wish that our society becomes even more vigilant and sensitive towards the respect, self-respect, and empowerment of women," he said.

Raksha Bandhan is traditionally associated with the relationship between brothers and sisters and symbolises affection, trust and a commitment to support and protect one another.

Families mark the festival with traditional rituals

As part of the celebrations, sisters traditionally tie colourful rakhis around their brothers' wrists and pray for their health, happiness and prosperity.

Brothers, in turn, offer gifts and express their commitment to stand by their sisters through different phases of life.

Families also exchange sweets and gifts as part of the celebrations.

A common ritual involves sisters applying tilak on their brothers' foreheads before tying the rakhi. The ceremony is often followed by prayers and family gatherings.

Festival observed on the full moon day

Raksha Bandhan is observed annually on the full moon day, or Purnima, of the Hindu month of Shravana. The date of the festival changes each year according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar.

The festival is primarily celebrated in India and Nepal and generally falls in August.

This year's Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated on Friday, with leaders, public figures and citizens sharing greetings and messages highlighting the importance of family bonds, affection and mutual support.

For many families, the occasion also provides an opportunity for relatives to come together, exchange gifts and reaffirm the bonds that form an important part of the festival's traditions.
