The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has directed the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the death of Shilpa Gaware, a married woman from Wakad, and file the chargesheet at the earliest.
Shilpa allegedly died by suicide after facing mental, physical and financial harassment at her matrimonial home. The fact that she took the extreme step after 17 years of marriage has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death.
Maharashtra State Commission for Women Member Secretary Nandini Awade held a meeting at the Women and Child Development Commissionerate in Pune to review the case.
During the meeting, the investigating officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police presented details of the investigation carried out so far.
Awade directed the police to examine all aspects of the case thoroughly and ensure that the investigation is completed without delay.
According to the police, a case has been registered at Wakad Police Station under provisions relating to dowry death and other applicable laws.
Police have arrested Shilpa's husband Sachin Gaware, mother-in-law Sanjivani Gaware, father-in-law Uttam Gaware and brother-in-law Sandeep Gaware.
The four accused have subsequently been remanded to judicial custody.
According to Shilpa's family, she was allegedly repeatedly harassed and pressured to bring money from her parental family and obtain a share in her family's property.
The family alleged that she had faced harassment at her matrimonial home for several years.
They have also raised doubts over whether Shilpa died by suicide, alleging that the circumstances could indicate a case of murder.
Taking note of the family's allegations, Awade directed the police to investigate every aspect of the case, including the circumstances surrounding Shilpa's death.
The Commission stressed that all relevant facts must be brought on record and the case should be taken forward strictly in accordance with the law.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunil Kurhade, investigating officer and Senior Police Inspector Vitthal Salunkhe, Women and Child Development Deputy Commissioner Yogesh Jawade, District Protection Officer Anjali Mozar and Taluka Protection Officer Nutan Devkar, among other officials, attended the meeting.
The Commission has called for the chargesheet to be filed at the earliest following completion of the investigation.
