One person was killed and six others were rescued after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan area on Sunday, officials said, reported the IANS.

Following the Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled his scheduled visit to Goa.

Rescue operations were continuing as concerns remained over people possibly trapped under the rubble.

The incident also triggered calls from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for a high-level inquiry and accountability over the collapse.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta rushed to the spot to personally review rescue and relief operations, officials said.

Over 40-year-old building collapses

According to Delhi Police, the building was around 40 to 50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation.

Repair work was reportedly under way in the basement when the building collapsed.

One person was pulled out from the debris and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors declared him dead.

Six people have been rescued so far, while officials continued efforts to search the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.

People trapped in rubble: Eyewitness

According to the IANS, eyewitnesses claimed that around 20 to 30 people could still be under the rubble, although authorities had not confirmed the figure.

A Delhi University student living in a nearby PG said residents initially believed the building was shaking because of an earthquake. He said he and others later helped rescue a person from the rubble before police and fire brigade teams arrived.

Political parties demand probe

Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda described the incident as extremely tragic and called for accountability over safety standards in PG accommodations.

He questioned the roles of civic authorities, the Fire Department, the Delhi government and other officials responsible for approving layouts and checking fire safety.

AAP convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed concern over the incident and urged the government to take large-scale measures to improve public safety.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi called for a high-level investigation and strict action against anyone found responsible for negligence.

Meanwhile, NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar, who was campaigning nearby, said members of the organisation reached the spot and helped rescue people from the debris.
