China has developed a low-cost chemical method that focuses on the hydrogenolysis of polyolefins, using a reaction in to break down polyolefins and transform them into aviation fuel.
Polyolefins make up most of the global plastic waste. It is the family of plastics behind common items like grocery bags and shampoo bottles.
The team used a custom catalyst that pairs cobalt with nickel to slice molecular chains and deliver a liquid yield of 82.3 per cent jet fuel. However, the research is not ready for practical use.
