Researchers at University of California, Davis have sequenced the genome of Aptostichus stephencolberti — a rare California trapdoor spider named after comedian Stephen Colbert.
Despite its tiny size, the spider possesses a genome of 4.6 billion base pairs, roughly 50 per cent larger than a human genome. Rather than containing more functional genes, about 77 per cent of this massive DNA consists of repetitive sequences.
