A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Aomori, Japan, has triggered a historic and terrifying warning. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a rare "Megaquake Advisory" for the Hokkaido–Sanriku coast, the first of its kind for this region. Officials are urging the public to prepare for a temporarily heightened risk of a devastating Magnitude 8.0 or greater earthquake within the next week. While the immediate chance is statistically low (around 1% probability), the danger of a subsequent, catastrophic event is now "higher than normal," putting coastal communities on edge.
