Club players were threatened by tennis ball cricketers, say team officials

A Kanga League match is cancelled at Shivaji Park after interference from tennis ball players

Dr HD Kanga Cricket League matches at Shivaji Park had to be cancelled due to heavy interference of tennis ball cricketers on Sunday.
It all started when players from both games [Kanga League and tennis ball matches] got hit with the ball during the course of play.

A quarrel went on for more than an hour on Sunday morning and umpires and observers had to cancel all matches, except the ‘E' Division game played at Shivaji Park Gymkhana (BRD CC v Young Friends CC) and Central Railway (New Amrit CC Regent CC) pitch.

The ‘H' Division game between Modern CC and Gaud Union started with a lot of tennis ball cricketers playing just near their Young Maharashtra CC plot.
Officials had to cancel this.

"There were more than 100 tennis ball cricketers near our Kanga match pitch. They threatened our players. It is the Mumbai Cricket Association's [MCA] duty to take care of our players. We all are MCA registered players playing in MCA's official tournament," Modern CC coach Mobin Shaikh told mid-day on Sunday.

"Both umpires Ashish Salunke and Niranjan Nene and match observer Naresh Kamble tried their best to ensure the game should go on. Such type of interference is a regular thing and we request MCA to come up with a solution. They should take utmost care of our players. Tennis ball cricketers were in no mood to listen even to the umpires and MCA observer. Who will be responsible if tennis ball cricketers take extreme steps in anger and hit our players with a stump. It may cause a severe injury." Mobin asked.

Meanwhile, MCA observer Naresh Kamble said: "Since morning tennis ball players started playing by putting stumps just by the side of our game's plot. They told us when the Kanga match starts they will remove their stumps. But they continued playing even after our match started. After someone got hit with the ball, the tennis ball cricketers started arguing and stopped our match. They rushed to meet our umpires and a few of them were very aggressive. So we, along with the umpires had to cancel the game."
