Chaos at banks? Alert cops of volatile situations via WhatsApp

Maharashtra Police issued a list of 46 mobile phone numbers and an advisory, asking people to reach out to it through WhatsApp, calls and SMSes to prevent any volatile situation outside banks or ATMs

As banks re-opened after a day’s break, the Maharashtra Police on Tuesday issued a list of 46 mobile phone numbers and an advisory, asking people to reach out to it through WhatsApp, calls and SMSes to prevent any volatile situation outside banks or ATMs.

"There could be law and order problems at banks that reopened today. Huge crowds are expected to throng these venues. So, police personnel across the state have been asked to be on the alert and respond quickly to even petty quarrels. Bank officials have also been asked to call the police in case of an untoward situation," a police source said.

The advisory has assayed fears of security personnel at banks.

On Sunday, Bhiwandi police had to resort to lathicharge when the crowd turned unruly at a bank.
