Actress Surbhi Das was adored for her debut show Nima Denzongpa. After her stint in Pandya Store, she decided to switch gears and explore the OTT and film space. She is gearing up for Carnaame on Amazon Prime and Nitesh Tiwari’s magnum opus Ramayana, in which she essays the role of Sita Maa’s (Sai Pallavi) sister. In an exclusive chat with Mid-Day, Surbhi gets candid about her struggles and heaps praise on Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi. Surbhi Das on transition to web and films Surbhi gained prominence with her stint in Nima Denzongpa, which highlighted the struggles and racism faced by North-Eastern people. However, she was fortunate that the show didn’t make her a household name, as it made it easier for her to audition for web and films. Surbhi explains, “When you are transitioning from TV to web, it’s a bit tough. People tend to know you by your character names. Once casting directors find out that you’ve been part of a television show, they often hesitate to audition you further. There’s still a typical mindset about TV actors. I feel fortunate that Nima did not become a household name.” Surbhi Das on TV work hours However, the decision to quit TV also came from the feeling that Surbhi’s talent was not getting enough credence. She shared, “While doing Pandya Store, I eventually made the decision that I didn’t want to do TV anymore because I felt my talent was being wasted. I felt my craft wasn’t being used enough, as I was just there giving reactions that meant nothing to me. It became very monotonous after a point, so I decided I will quit TV. I’m not looking down on TV, but I feel it follows the same pattern.” Commenting on long working hours in TV affecting personal lives, the actress revealed, “When I was working in TV, during one of my shows, I fell so sick that I had to be rushed to a doctor. The production guy even told the doctor to give me an injection so that I could get back to shooting as soon as possible. I was literally sleeping for just 2–3 hours, often on set, usually in the makeup room. I feel that once you’re doing TV, you hardly have any personal life.” The actress also recalled how she faced rejections in her career because of her complexion. Surbhi on Ramayana She is currently in the news as she is also a part of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, essaying the role of Maa Sita’s sister and Shatrughan’s wife. Revisiting her audition day, Surbhi recalled how, during the time of selection, she was unaware of the cast. “At that time, I couldn’t understand that this project was worth crores. But gradually, I did, and I am excited. I have seen all the people’s reactions and their feedback as well. I am sure the makers are working on it.” Working on this project was overwhelming for her, as she didn’t know how to exist among stalwarts. Speaking of Ranbir, the actress gushed, “When Ranbir Kapoor came on set, he obviously came as Rama. I literally felt like, ‘My God, this guy is actually looking like Rama.’ In all the scenes we did together, I always felt that he was in character. And even for Sai Pallavi, we know she doesn’t apply much makeup, yet she was looking so pretty.” Opening up about Ranbir’s hard work and dedication, Surbhi averred, “To play Lord Rama, you need to have that aura and grace. When you walk on set, you need to have that energy about you that makes people look at you no matter what. And Ranbir Kapoor carried that. He had this energy and aura about him. Even when we were not doing a scene, he was in his character, as he is an introverted guy.” Recalling her interactions with Sai Pallavi, the actress shared, “Our bonding was really good, as we play sisters. I asked her about the South industry, and she answered very sweetly. And when the last day came, she almost got emotional.”

11 April,2026 10:53 PM IST | Mumbai | Priyanka SharmaHansika Motwani’s ongoing legal battle with her estranged sister-in-law Muskaan Nancy James has taken another turn after the latter reacted to reports of a Rs 2 crore defamation lawsuit filed against her. The controversy stems from a series of serious allegations made earlier by Muskaan, who had accused Hansika and her brother of domestic violence and harassment. In response, Hansika approached a Mumbai sessions court, seeking Rs 2 crore in damages and a public apology, claiming the accusations were false and defamatory. Hansika Motwani takes the legal route According to reports, Hansika’s legal plea also requested that Muskaan be restrained from making further statements against her. The actress has maintained that the allegations have caused significant harm to her reputation and were circulated on social media without basis. The dispute is further complicated by a financial angle. Hansika alleged that Muskaan had borrowed Rs 27 lakh during her marriage to Hansika’s brother and failed to repay the amount. The defamation suit claims that the accusations may have been made to avoid returning the money. However, reacting to reports of the lawsuit, Muskaan took to social media to question their authenticity. In a pointed Instagram post, she wrote, “Dearest paid PR team, a little verification before posting would really help… notice gaya hai kya?” She also sarcastically referenced “Mumbai traffic,” suggesting she had not received any legal notice regarding the case. Muskaan Nancy James reacts to the case Her response appeared to dismiss the claims as premature or unverified, adding another layer of tension to the already complicated situation. Muskaan also questioned the sources of the reports, hinting that misinformation may be driving the narrative. The legal battle traces back to an FIR filed by Muskaan in 2024, where she accused Hansika, her brother, and other family members of cruelty and harassment under various sections of law. These allegations were strongly denied by Hansika, who has consistently maintained that she had minimal involvement in her brother’s marital life. With both sides presenting conflicting claims, the matter has now escalated into a high-profile legal dispute involving allegations of defamation, financial disagreements, and family conflict. As the case unfolds, it continues to draw attention due to its complex mix of personal and legal issues. Whether Muskaan formally responds in court or the matter is resolved through legal proceedings remains to be seen, but for now, the public back-and-forth has only intensified the spotlight on the ongoing feud.
11 April,2026 10:31 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentProducer Ektaa Kapoor recently offered a surprising glimpse into Bollywood’s most talked-about birthday parties, revealing what really happens when celebrities attend celebrations hosted by superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Ektaa Kapoor talks about the gifting culture In a candid interaction, Ektaa dismissed the common belief that lavish gifts are exchanged at such high-profile gatherings. According to her, guests rarely bring presents when attending the birthday parties of actors of this stature. She pointed out that it’s difficult to even decide what to gift someone who seemingly has everything. Instead of material items, attendees usually offer something far simpler good wishes and blessings. Ektaa explained that this practice is quite common in the industry, especially when it comes to the biggest names. The idea of turning up with expensive or extravagant gifts, she suggested, is more of a public assumption than reality. In fact, she emphasized that most people prefer to keep things minimal and meaningful rather than focusing on material exchanges. Ektaa Kapoor reveals secret behind SRK and Salman's party She also addressed the larger perception of Bollywood parties, which are often imagined as wild, glamorous, and indulgent affairs. Contrary to this image, Ektaa said the film industry is far more subdued than people think. She described it as “boring” in a practical sense, explaining that many industry professionals follow disciplined routines. According to her, most individuals prioritize work, health, and early schedules over late-night partying. Adding a personal touch, Ektaa revealed that she herself doesn’t enjoy hosting big birthday parties. Instead, she prefers to spend her special day in a more spiritual and private way. She shared that she usually visits Tirupati on her birthday and avoids organizing large gatherings altogether. Her remarks offer a refreshing perspective on celebrity culture, challenging long-held assumptions about extravagance in Bollywood. While fans often imagine opulent celebrations filled with luxury and excess, Ektaa’s insights suggest a more grounded reality one where even the biggest stars value simplicity, personal connections, and heartfelt gestures over grand displays.
11 April,2026 07:56 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentSalman Khan’s much-awaited film Maatrubhumi is reportedly undergoing major changes, with fresh developments suggesting that key elements of the story have been altered following concerns raised by the Ministry of Defence. Originally titled Battle of Galwan, the film is inspired by the 2020 India-China clash in Ladakh. However, recent reports indicate that the makers have been asked to avoid directly referencing China in the narrative, given the sensitive geopolitical context and improving diplomatic relations between the two nations. China mention removed from the film According to reports, the Ministry of Defence expressed reservations about how the subject was being portrayed. As a result, the filmmakers, including director Apoorva Lakhia, reportedly undertook extensive reshoots to align the project with the suggested changes. Nearly 40 percent of the film has been reworked, with new scenes, including additional backstory and emotional elements, introduced to reshape the narrative. A source revealed that the film, which was initially closely tied to real events, has now been given a more fictionalised treatment. “Earlier, the film was inspired by a real event. But as per the request… [they] added a fictional spin to the story,” the source stated, highlighting the scale of the badlav. One of the key directives reportedly issued was that “China shouldn’t be mentioned in the film,” a request that had been communicated to the makers in advance. The revised cut submitted to authorities is said to have complied with this instruction, removing any direct references to the neighbouring country. Despite these significant modifications, the film’s clearance is still uncertain. Reports suggest that the Ministry continues to have some apprehensions, leaving the project’s release timeline unclear. All about Maatrubhumi The film, which also stars Chitrangda Singh, was initially scheduled for an April 2026 release but has since been postponed. While there were earlier expectations of a May release, the ongoing revisions and approval process may push it further. Maatrubhumi has been one of the most anticipated projects in Salman Khan’s lineup, especially given its patriotic theme and real-life inspiration. However, the evolving situation underscores the challenges of portraying sensitive historical events on screen, particularly when they intersect with current diplomatic realities. As the makers continue to navigate these changes, fans await clarity on when the film will finally hit theatres and what its final version will look like.

11 April,2026 05:25 PM IST | Mumbai | ANIIt's not a great time for smaller films like Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, says the film's star Ranvir Shorey, stressing that independent movies have struggled to find an audience, first in cinemas and now increasingly on streaming platforms as well. Shorey is one of the most prominent names in the world of indie cinema with credits that include titles like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, Mixed Doubles and Dasvidaniya. He currently plays a pivotal role in the indie whodunnit Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, which is written and directed by seasoned actor Rajat Kapoor. "It's not a great time right now for smaller films like our film. Because earlier, the theatrical system was difficult for smaller independent films because of the big films and big star system. Then the streaming platforms came, it became some kind of respite for these kinds of films. But now again, we see even on streaming platforms, the gatekeeping is becoming similar to how it was in the theatrical system," Shorey told PTI in an interview. The 53-year-old actor said that while the success of large-scale spectacles like Aditya Dhar's two-part spy saga Dhurandhar may boost the Hindi film industry, he remains unconvinced about their impact on smaller films. "I really don't see how the success of a film like Dhurandhar will help films like Sohrab Handa because these films are not about spectacle. They are about characters, about cinematic excellence without the scale, the grandeur and the budget," Shorey said. "One hopes that, just as the industry evolved from theatrical to television to streaming, the internet itself will eventually offer solutions for this as well," he added. Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, which currently streams on streaming platform ZEE5, is a mystery thriller about a couple's perfect anniversary party at an old mansion that goes awry when the most hated guest, Sohrab Handa, is found murdered. Besides Shorey, the movie features Vinay Pathak, Waluscha De Sousa, Saurabh Shukla, Koel Puri, Sadia Siddiqui and Chandrachoor Rai. The actor expressed gratitude to ZEE5 and production banner Applause Entertainment for supporting small films."We need more such productions like from Applause. We need more platforms to do the kind of work Zee5 is doing in giving platforms to smaller films. We need more of this," he added. 11 April,2026 03:37 PM IST | Mumbai | PTINawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the most talented, versatile, and legendary actors in Indian cinema. He is someone whose genuine love for his craft and mettle for acting clearly reflect in his work. Having delivered countless incredibly different roles, be it the hero or the villain, he has made every character memorable. Fans eagerly await his films, and now he is gearing up for the release of his next film, Main Actor Nahin Hoon, in Indian theatres, after a successful run at international film festivals. Nawazuddin Siddiqui worked on Main Actor Nahin Hoon for free The film’s director, Aditya Kripalani, described working with Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a dream come true, highlighting his professionalism and dedication despite not charging any fee. He also revealed the film was earlier titled Impulse before Nawazuddin came on board. Talking to Filmfare, Aditya shared, “He was an absolute professional. He even bought his own ticket to reach Frankfurt, all by himself. He didn’t come with his manager.” He further added, “Him not charging a fee is a big thing, really big. In India, there is always that pressure of ‘how much are you earning?’ When someone like Nawaz doesn’t charge money, you can actually turn around and say, 'This is my earning.' It’s one of the high points of my career." The actor’s commitment goes far beyond just performance, with his decision to forgo fees standing as a true testament to his passion for the craft. Audiences will now get to witness it on the big screen as Main Actor Nahin Hoon releases in theatres on May 8, 2026. Aditya on film's India release The Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Chitrangada Satarupa-starrer revolves around a struggling actor in Mumbai who connects with a melancholic retired banker in Frankfurt through virtual acting lessons. Speaking to mid-day, Kriplani said, “We have a very able distributor in Platoon One Films, headed by Shiladitya Bora. They’ve backed smaller films, like Newton [2017] that have gone on to do very well. So we’re keeping our fingers crossed.” In an industry where screens are often dominated by big-ticket spectacles, the question of space looms at large for intimate, dialogue-driven cinema. “That’s always a concern,” he admits. “But Nawazuddin Siddiqui brings credibility. He has carried many films as a lead in theatres. So we’re hopeful.” Kriplani also draws confidence from the overwhelming response at the film’s premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose. “It was a 600-seater theatre, completely full,” he recalls. “I’m really excited that the film has come home.”
