Developers given the responsibility of constructing 185 cessed buildings under the Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) has landed in deep trouble for delaying the projects. The Authority has already cancelled the NOCs given to 35 projects and has served show-cause notices to the remaining 150. It has also initiated the process of taking action against the developers.

According to sources, MHADA also plans to attach the properties of the developers, who have stopped construction of some of the projects mid-way and eventually take them over for redevelopment. The sources further said that the files of these projects have been sent to the government for approval.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a MHADA official said, "We have cancelled the NOCs of 35 projects, which have failed to take off for a very long time. Further, we have issued show-cause notices to another 150 projects, as even they have not been started over the past 10 years. If the developers fail to respond, then we'll cancel their NOCs as well. In fact, we have started the cancellation process for a couple of projects."

Sources said that MHADA had issued NOCs to about 2,058 redevelopment projects, of which 699 have already been completed. This has helped in rehabilitating 18,580 tenants. However, due to several reasons, developers have delayed the remaining projects and have also failed to provide relief to nearly 52,000 tenants.
