Two more cases of harassment of women on Metro premises have come to the fore. In both cases, jawans from the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF), which is deputed at each Metro station, sprung into action to nab the offender and hand them over to the nearest police stations.

On Saturday morning, Sakshi M (name changed), a college student, was on her way to her institute in Andheri (West) and boarded a Versova-bound Metro from Marol. The incident occurred between 7.20 am and 7.45 am. Sakshi told mid-day, “In the morning, at around 7.25 am, I took the Metro to Versova. When I was standing inside the train, I noticed the man seated opposite me, continuously staring at me.

Initially, I avoided him, as he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. No sooner had Andheri station passed, than he passed some comments on me. I shouted at him and asked him to stay within his limits. Two MSF jawans, who were also present in the train in plainclothes, immediately caught him. We alighted at Azad Nagar station and took him to the D N Nagar police station. Had they not intervened, the situation would’ve gotten out of control.”

Appreciating the guards for their promptness in action, Sakshi called for having one guard inside each train so such instances can be avoided. But, she didn’t register a case with the police. When asked why, she replied: “My parents are staying abroad and I stay here alone.

With my college exams and assignments going on, I had to rush to the college.” She didn’t want to be involved in the matter. So, a non-cognisable complaint (NC) has been registered at the station, stating that the accused, in his drunken state, was fighting with a jawan.

In another shameful case on Sunday, a woman was going up to the platform at Andheri Metro station via the escalator when a man allegedly touched her inappropriately. She screamed at the man and the MSF jawans present there immediately caught the accused and handed him over to the Andheri police.

Copspeak
An official from DN Nagar police station said, “On Saturday morning, two MSF jawans came along with a person, and complained that he had misbehaved with them in the Metro between Andheri and Azad Nagar station. We have taken an NC in the incident.” When contacted Senior PI Nandkumar Dhumal from Andheri police station said, “I am not aware of this issue. I’ll have to verify the facts before commenting.”

Metrospeak
A spokesperson from Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd said, “On August 9, a drunk man was misbehaving with the MSF guard. We have filed an NC at D N Nagar police station. Metro security guards are equipped and trained to handle such cases. MMOPL will cooperate with Mumbai Police in all possible ways to make Metro safe.”
