As per a report in the Hindustan Times, senior police inspector from the Ambernath police station, B Wagh is quoted as having said, "This led to a heated argument and bouts of fisticuffs. The other family members joined the fight. One of the accused got a knife and stabbed Shaikh in his chest. Shaikh was also beaten up severely."

While Shaikh was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The key accused is 27-year-old Khalid Sayyed who works as a vegetable vendor. It is also reported that the two families had a previous history of discord.

A case has been registered against all six family members under the IPC. However, while the police were able to nab Khalid Sayyed, the rest of the family members remain absconding.
