A high court ban on bullock cart racing has not been able to stop people from indulging in the activity. A video that has gone viral on social media shows a couple of such carts racing in the Silver Park area in Mira Road East, when one of them meets with an accident, throwing off the two people on it. Later, the bulls are seen entering a nearby society.

Sources said the incident happened on December 26. Reportedly, the St. Jerome Church organises a festival every year on December 25, in which villagers from Uttan, Gorai, Manori, Bhayander, Kashi-Mira and nearby areas participate. They wear traditional clothes and come on their bullock and horse carts.

On December 26, when Kashi-Mira villagers were returning home on their bullock carts, some of them suddenly started racing, which led to the accident. The wheels of one of the carts got detached and the people riding it fell off. Sources said no one was critically injured in the incident.

Speaking to mid-day, animal lover Fiza Shah said, "As per an HC order, bullock cart racing is illegal. This is not only being cruel towards the animals, but is also dangerous for commuters. The police should take strict action against the culprits."

Police speak
Dr Mahesh Patil, superintendent of police, Thane, said, "The carts were not racing, they were standing at the signal. The moment the light turned green, they rushed the carts forward and met with an accident in the process."
